156 How to Deliver a Great Speech that Will Change Minds and Influence People IV. Welcome Patrick Henry

The basic topic outline for this introduction should suffice to write an introduction that should run two to four minutes at the longest. Remember, this speech is more about the guest.

“Young ladies and young gentlemen, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Edward Carrington, and I was a young resident of the American colony of Virginia in March 1775. On March 23, 1775, I was invited to St. John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia, to hear a discussion about the future of our young colonies of America. One of the speakers in this discussion is our guest here today. That man is Patrick Henry. When I heard Mr.

Henry speak about his feelings for his home, his beloved Virginia and America I declared, “Let me be buried on this spot!” for I then believed that I would never hear anything so beautiful and faithful again.

Patrick Henry is, indeed, a Founding Father of these United States of America. Patrick Henry is one of the most memorable leaders of the American revolutionary struggle against the rule of the British Crown; a colonel of the First Virginia Regiment; a governor of Virginia; an American hero.

We would like to thank Mr. Patrick Henry for joining us today to talk to us about American patriotism. So, without further adieu, please welcome Mr. Patrick Henry.”

This example runs about a minute and a half. The example, a first draft of an introductory speech, accomplishes what it set out to accomplish and does so in a clear and concise manner.

This nontraditional presentation is just an example of an infinite variety of speech presentations that an individual might be asked to give. Whether you are to give an acceptance speech, an informative presentation, or are involved in a persuasive debate,

many creative avenues are open to you to make your presentation memorable. If the situation will allow, take your time to consider offering your audience something that will be completely different from anything they have seen or experienced before.

Many situations are best served by more traditional presentation methods, but if you think there is an opportunity to be creative, by all means, make your presentation memorable.

Writing Wrap-Up

Knowing how to gather facts into clear lines of thought, outline, and write an effective presentation is a skill that takes practice.

Many writers will tell you that to be an effective communicator, whether you are writing, speaking, or playing a musical instrument, you have to practice every day. Methods of practice, as it relates to public speaking, will be explored in Chapter 8. To practice your writing, make a point of writing on a daily basis. Many people write every day and do not even think about it. Whether you write as a part of your job, write email, social media posts, or daily journals, you can think about any of these as daily practice.
